CỨ LÀM ĐI (JUST DO IT)

Hồi lớp 1, mình được gọi là “Xuân Quang đội sổ” vì học dốt nhất lớp.
(Back in 1st grade, I was nicknamed “Xuân Quang at the class bottom” because I was the worst student.)
Mình không ngại. Cứ học mãi rồi cũng “bò” lên được giữa lớp.
(I wasn’t ashamed. I just kept studying and slowly “crawled” up to the middle of the class.)
Thi đại học, năm đầu được 20.5 điểm thì FTU lấy 21; năm sau được 21 điểm thì FTU lấy 21.5.
(In the first year taking the university entrance exam, I got 20.5 points while FTU’s cut-off was 21; the next year I got 21, FTU and the bar was 21.5.)
Mình không ngại. Thi lần thứ 3 thì đỗ được FTU và học 2 trường ĐH cùng lúc.
(I wasn’t discouraged. On the third try, I got into FTU and learnt in 2 colleges at a time.)
Năm 2008, apply học bổng thạc sĩ, 4.30 chiều hết hạn mà 4h vẫn còn thiếu 1 tờ giấy quan trọng.
(In 2008, when applying for a master’s scholarship, the deadline was 4:30 PM, and at 4 PM, one important document was still unfinished.)
Mình phóng từ trường lên Bộ GD vào 4.25′, nộp hồ sơ kèm theo lời xin lỗi: “Em vẫn còn thiếu 1 tài liệu, chị cho em nộp bổ sung sau”.
(I raced on my bike from school and arrived at the MOET at 4.25. I submitted my documents along with an apology: “I’m still short of one paper. Could I please submit it later?”)
Nhờ quả “nộp hồ sơ phút cuối”, mình được học bổng đi Mỹ.
(Thanks to that application, I received a scholarship to the U.S.)
Nghỉ dạy ở FTU, không bao giờ mình nghĩ là có thể tự apply học bổng.
(After quitting teaching at FTU, I never thought I could apply for a scholarship by myself.)
Nhưng thấy Iowa State University “xịn” quá – có giáo sư Levis hàng đầu về phát âm và luôn ngưỡng mộ thầy.
(But Iowa State University looked amazing, with Professor Levis – the top pronunciation researcher I’ve always admired.)
Mình làm hồ sơ xin đi học. Thế nào được đi làm, đi học, không mất học phí mà tháng có vài ngàn tiêu.
(I applied. Somehow I got the chance to study and work there, tuition-free, with a few thousand dollars to spend every month.)
Rút cục thì để thành công, cứ làm bừa đi.
(In the end, to succeed, just go for it — even if it feels reckless.)
Nếu làm, dù cơ hội nhỏ nhoi, bạn vẫn có thể thành công được. Không làm, cơ hội chắc chắn là bằng 0.
(If you try, even if the chances are tiny, you might still succeed. If you don’t try, the chance is definitely zero.)
Đời đơn giản vậy thôi! (Life is that simple!)
